Introduction to the Project

This is a tutorial on SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) entirely written in Amharic1. According to the SVG specification,

"SVG is a language for describing two-dimensional graphics in XML XML10. SVG allows for three types of graphic objects: vector graphic shapes (e.g., paths consisting of straight lines and curves), images and text. ..."

SVG can be used both with web or independent of web. Here it is implemented and presented as web application. The tutorial covers several of the fundamental features and provides many examples that illustrate each subjects.

Requirements

In order to read and follow this tutorial, it requires the following tool and font.

  • Adobe SVG Viewer: Those widely used browsers lack native support for SVG, but there is a plug-in tool from Adobe called SVG Viewer that is compatible with Internet Explorer. It is unfortunate that this plug-in works only with IE. The current version is 3.02 and can be downloaded from Adobe site. It is said that this viewer has better support than others. Another alternative is a stand alone application like Batik from the The Apache Software Foundation.
  • Ethiopic Unicode font which can be downloaded here.
